Introduction
Every year the Fetal Medicine Foundation awards several 2-year training fellowships in Fetal Medicine. The practical training is undertaken at the Harris Birthright Unit at King’s College Hospital, at the Fetal Medicine Centre (FMC) and a series of other hospitals that work closely with the FMC at King’s.
During the period of training the doctors are closely supervised by Professor Nicolaides and a team of Consultants in Fetal Medicine. They will observe and actively assist in the management of a wide range of patients. This will range from screening for fetal abnormalities to involvement in complex conditions diagnosed antenatally, such as twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. The involvement of the doctors will vary depending on their level of experience, but the aim is that the trainees become competent in all aspects of patient care and counselling.
It is expected that by the end of the Training Fellowship the doctor will have obtained the Fetal Medicine Foundation Certificates of Competence in:
- The 11-13+6 week scan
- The 18-23-week scan
- Cervical assessment
- Fetal echocardiography
- Placental and fetal Doppler
- Invasive intrauterine procedures
The trainees will have the opportunity to develop their research interests in fetal-maternal medicine or take part in ongoing research studies, leading to either a postgraduate qualification (PhD or MD) from the University of London or equivalent university, or a series of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals. In addition to undertaking their own research projects the trainees will work closely with other doctors in the Harris Birthright Unit, and will be expected to work efficiently within this team, assist in other research projects and develop organizational skills.
The doctors who have successfully obtained all the above Certificates of Competence and carried out research will be eligible for the Fetal Medicine Foundation Diploma in Fetal Medicine.
Applicants should send their CV and a letter explaining reasons for applying and the time they would be available to start if successful, to Million Berhe at fmfeducation@fetalmedicine.com.
